Stone Sculptors Symposium at Suttle Lake, Oregon

The Northwest Stone Sculptors Association is excited to be holding our annual Oregon State Stone Carving Symposium at a new venue this year! We welcome you to Suttle Lake Camp!
The symposium is open to all levels from beginners who have never carved stone before to the experienced sculptor. Make new friends, renew old friendships and fire up the creative spirit in a rich, supportive environment.
Suttle Lake Camp is nestled on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains, about 14 miles west of Sisters,Oregon. Suttle Lake Camp is a special place where the vivid green of Western Oregon mingles with the sunny beauty of the eastern part of the state. Mid-afternoons, you might find the time to cool off with a swim, paddle a boat across the lake, take a leisurely bike ride or walk along the trails nearby.
Workshops and Instruction: Our inclusive community will set up a circle of tents to carve, share, learn and be invigorated. From the beginner’s tent to the professional’s tool chest, there are ample ways to advance one’s ideas, talents and learning.
Extensive carving sessions are interspersed with informative classes and stimulating sculpting lessons. Field instructors are always available to help guide you through your challenges. Bring your gear (if you are a beginner, we have tools you can use), connect to our power, water and air sources and peruse the tools and variety of stones being carved and available for purchase.
Our evenings bring professionals to show their images and expertise in a broad range of sculpture. Revel under the stars at the campfire before turning in for a well-deserved rest.
FEATURED INSTRUCTORS
East & West: From Classical to High-Tech
The NWSSA continues our tradition of bringing together world class sculpting masters for unique opportunities to provide instruction and discuss where we are today. From classical hand tools to new high tech machining tools and techniques, our instructors provide knowledge and inspiration for all attendees.
Kazutaka Uchida – Uchida Sensei from Japan returns as guest sculptor. He will share his insights on the clean lines, subtle beauty and harmonious balance of sculptural forms, nature and Japanese aesthetics.
Kate Ali – Kate is an adjunct faculty member at Lane Community College’s Art and Applied Design Department. As an artist and a member of the Imonali Design team, she and her husband Lee Imonen, have proposed and created numerous public art projects. She is a strong advocate for arts education in public schools and has worked as a teaching artist in local middle and high schools. She currently serves as Vice-President of Lane Arts Council.
Mark Andrew – For Mark, sculpting takes intense concentration, physical energy and vision. It also takes time. For more than thirty years, he’s been mastering techniques, learning from mistakes and sculpting people’s dreams into reality. His fascination with sculpture began at 17 in Switzerland, where he was captivated by the relief sculpture in buildings, public spaces and homes. He carves from wood, stone and cast bronze and creates custom installations for homes: doors, fireplaces, statuary and other architectural pieces.
Michael Binkley – Michael has over 35 years’ experience working in stone, from conception to execution to marketing and selling a finished sculpture. He has an inclusive approach to his work and is very willing to share his knowledge. Michael will be a mentor on the work field during the symposium and welcomes any questions you may have. Patrick Doratti -(Doratti Sculpture Studios) With a background in digital imaging, animation and fine arts, Pat studied stone sculpture in Carrara, Italy. He is currently utilizing his background in CAD with a digital robotic arm to rough out large scale stone sculptures in his Nelson, B.C. studio.
Lee Imonen – Lee is a public artist working in sculpture and design He was awarded his BA from Willamette University, and his MFA from the University of Oregon. He has completed many public commissions throughout the state of Oregon and has work in both public and private collections nationally and internationally. He has been teaching at Lane Community College since 2000 and is a partner in the Imonali Design team.
Marie Sivak – Marie’s work combines traditional stone carving, digital fabrication and video. Recently described as “Nam June Paik meets ancient Rome”, the work embraces the tension between the handmade verses the technological, and consequently explores how technology, media, and the screen impact the emotional terrain of human relationships in contemporary life while meditating on the relationship between mind and b
Tool & Safety Talks with Dan Michael: Dan of Olympia, WA will display an array of power carving tools and methods while explaining safe operation.
Beginning Stone Carving: Several instructors are available throughout the week as we explore basic sculptural form, processes, techniques, and concepts while addressing historical and contemporary issues in sculpture.
Honoring Tom Urban:
On Thursday afternoon, August 24th, NWSSA is hosting a gathering of former students and friends to honor Tom Urban, retired University of Oregon professor, founding Director of EMU Craft Center, and Silver Falls Symposium Director for nearly 20 years. Professors Tom Urban and Laura Alpert were instrumental in bringing Kazutaka Uchida to exhibit his sculpture at the Museum of Art at UO. The workshop they initiated in 1994 has continued to give stone sculpture a home in the Pacific Northwest region.
Tuition Includes: Accommodations, Instruction & Meals. Symposium tuition includes double occupancy lodging in rustic style cabins and brand new semi-private shower facilities with dressing area. Cots with a mattress are provided, bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and linens. If you prefer more privacy and comfort, there are many hotels and B&B’s located nearby in Sisters.
