Minutes of NWSSA BOD Meeting 7-10-2019

Meeting Called to Order at 8:30pm


Election of Executive Board

The first order of business was the election of executive officers, which proceeded following the vacating of each position, motions being made and seconded to nominate and elect:

  • President – Ken Barnes
  • Vice President – Ben Mefford
  • Treasurer – Kirsten Rayhawk
  • Secretary – Ellie Hochman

Board Members Present: Rick Johnson, Julianne Kohn, Kirsten Rayhawk, Steve Sandry, Michael Yeaman, Ellie Hochman, Ken Barnes.

Members present included Carl Nelson, Pat Barton, Cyra Jane Hobson, Ed Salerno, Markos Weiss and Ben Kimura.

The agenda for the meeting was approved unanimously by the board, and reads as follows:

  1. Pilgrim Firs Report
  2. Membership Dues
  3. Report on Women’s Carving Event
  4. New Business
  5. Adjourn

Pilgrim Firs Report

Cyra Jane stated her commitment to continue in her current position as Director of Pilgrim Firs for “the next few years”.

Financial report indicates that there will be a cost allocation change that will move funds from the scholarship fund to the general fund. This current event is going well and should produce a surplus of about $15,000 for the general fund. 

Suttle Lake Report

There was no Suttle lake Report

Financial Report

Financial allocation issue 

Ken Barnes suggested that the issue of fund allocation be addressed by a financial subcommittee.

A motion was made to do a one time “Emergency fund Paddle Raise” at both Pilgrim Firs and Suttle Lake Auctions to address the declining General Fund. 

After discussion and vote of 4/4, the proposal did not pass.

Kirsten proposed that the Board decide by March how to permanently address the imbalance between the general fund and scholarship funds. Board agreed to this.

The Board discussed raising membership dues as a way to begin resolving the general fund deficit.

A motion to

1- Raise the dues by $5 from $45 to $50 per year.

2- Create an additional category for people to donate on a monthly basis 

3- Maintain the $35 student category

 After discussion, the Board passed the above proposal unanimously.

Misc items:

-Ellie Hochman provided information and review of the Women’s Hand Carving Event.

-Carl Nelson Agreed to continue as Webmaster

-Ben M is taking on position of Journal Editor.

-King County Parks update-They are moving forward to set up two large display sites

-Ben Kimura approached board to discuss concerns he has about having “work studies” presenting items at the auction. Ellie Hochman and Rick Johnson discussed this with him. Plan was made for Ellie Hochman to accompany Ben to discuss this with PF camp director.
