REGISTER NOW for Silver Falls Stone Sculptors Symposium
August 24th – 29th, 2013 – Oregon
Stone carvers are invited, once again, to convene at the Silver Falls State Park Conference Center for 5 full days of sculpting fun. Under the lush canopy of Douglas fir trees, this inclusive community sets up a circle of tents to carve, share, learn and be invigorated. From the beginner’s tent to the professional’s tool chest, there are ample ways to advance one’s ideas, talents and learning.
Extensive carving sessions are interspersed with informative classes and stimulating sculpting lessons. Field instructors are always available to help noodle through your challenges. Bring your gear, connect to our power, water and air sources and peruse the tools and variety of stones being carved and available for purchase.
Fabulous meals and comfortable lodge rooms let us relax in between activities. Our evenings bring professionals to show their images and expertise in a broad range of sculpture. Revel under the stars at the campfire before turning in for a well-deserved rest. Don’t forget to bring your tools and “special” items (ask if you’re curious) for The Auction, a rollicking great time that raises educational funds.
Sign up early to reserve your spot for an international hit this summer. Work study positions are available by application.
FEATURED INSTRUCTORS
Kazutaka Uchida We welcome Uchida Sensei back to Silver Falls for 2013. He will be sharing his insights on sculptural forms, nature and Japanese aesthetics. Also included are demonstrations using traditional tools, such as the faceted point chisel (for stippling) and wedge system (tobi-ya) used in splitting stone. His workshops will show us how to vary surface treatments from split, pitched and natural rind surfaces to stippled and polished. Uchida has unique insights on these processes and techniques in developing his sculpture.
Anthony Kaufman The perfection of polishing is Anthony’s expertise, which he will guide us through the steps for stunning results.
Pat Barton Working with water in small spaces is Pat’s forte. He will show us his methods for using water irrigation components to cool blades and control dust.
“Tool Talk” with Tom Urban and Dan Michael These two tool hounds will astound us with an unbelievable array of carving tools and methods. Bring your note pad for cataloging sure handed and safe operation of sculpting equipment.
Stephanie Robison ‘Working Really Small’ San Francisco sculptor and Head of Sculpture at City College of S.F. shares her contemporary work.
