It was a hot one this year at the 2024 International Stone Carving Symposium in Washington! During one of the peninsula’s rare heat waves, temperatures soared to nearly 100 degrees early in the week. The nearly 105 carvers onsite galiantly drank water, jumped in the lake, took naps in the presentation room, and took their electrolytes to power through and make this year one of the best symposia we’ve had.
Our visiting guest artists, Amy Brier, Kathryn Vinson, and Lee Gass taught us how to carve faces in Limestone, use botanicals as inspiration in Alabaster, and to use laser contour lines to refine and perfect curves and composition. Oliver Harwood and Stephanie Robison proved to be an excellent team in the newly outfitted Intermediate Power Tools workshop area, giving morning coffee talks on topics like multimedia integration and maquette building. Tamara Buchanan led the Beginner’s Hand Carving workshop in the dojo, initiating several new carvers into the process of working limestone and alabaster. In the Jade tent, Deborah Wilson taught the techniques and tricks of jade carving to a full roster of participants with the help of Julianne Kohn and Steve Sandry.
We once again had an absolutely inspiring and wonderful ten days together carving, laughing, and learning at Pilgrim Firs Camp. And we’re already looking forward to 2025!
