The Neddy at Cornish offers one of the largest artist awards in the State of Washington, providing two annual gifts of $25,000, and six awards of $2,000, to visual artists based in the Puget Sound region.
Any artist who is a U.S. citizen or permanent U.S. resident living and working in Island, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Mason, Pierce, Skagit, San Juan, Snohomish, Thurston, or Whatcom counties in Washington state is welcome to apply.
The award is funded by the Behnke Foundation and stewarded by Cornish College of the Arts as a tribute to the Seattle painter and teacher Ned Behnke (1948-1989). The 2019 open call for applications for the Neddy at Cornish is live from Monday, June 3rd 12:00 a.m. until Sunday, July 21st 11:59 p.m. PST.
The Neddy at Cornish announces Juan Franco as the 2019 Curator for the annual awards exhibition. Juan Franco (they/them/theirs) (b. 1991, Bogotá [Territorio Muisca]) is a visual and performance artist, community organizer, and arts educator.
Franco is Co-Founder and Co-Director of festival:festival, a free and public visual and performing arts festival in Seattle. festival:festival presents and supports artists and cultural workers in Seattle. As an arts educator, Franco has worked at the nonprofit, Youth in Focus, where they empower urban youth through the language of analog photography and its history
In 2014, Franco received a BFA in Art from Cornish College of the Arts and will receive an MA in Art History from the University of Washington with a research focus in Contemporary Art and Curatorial Studies in June 2019. During their studies, they have served as Assistant Curator at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery under the direction of Emily Zimmerman, Director of the Gallery.
