2026 Oregon State Stone Carving Symposium

Registration is Open for Our Oregon State Stone Carving Symposium

August 9-16th, 2026

The Northwest Stone Sculptors Association continues the tradition of bringing together world-class sculpting masters, artists, and enthusiasts for a week-long experience of instruction, exploration, and inspiration. From classical hand tools to high-tech machining tools and techniques, we honor the traditions of the past and the innovation of stone sculpting craft today.

In 2026, NWSSA welcomes Guest Artist Nicholas Fairplay– Nicholas is a master stone carver whose career bridges centuries-old European craftsmanship with international architectural restoration and archaeological research. Beginning his apprenticeship at age sixteen, Fairplay developed a depth of skills rooted in traditional Gothic and Renaissance techniques. He has been working in the field for decades and has the heaving-hitting, large-scale sculptures that will enthrall even the most seasoned carver. Holding both artistic mastery and scholarly expertise, Fairplay connects fine art, architecture, history, and living craft traditions. He will be demonstrating relief carving on limestone. He is sure to be a wealth of knowledge to learn from, be inspired by, and connect with throughout the week.

Workshops

Jade Carving – Julianne Kohn & Steve Sandry Julianne Kohn will provide instruction on a small scale jade token, teaching students the proper tools and process of hard stone sculpting and polishing. There may be additional materials fee depending upon the size and quality of jade you select.

Intarsia – Alison Jean Cole returns to teach the process of Intarsia using lapidary techniques and lamination to create small scale sculptures and jewelry. The recently acquired equipment was received from a grant on behalf of NWSSA to continue expanding our catalog of equipment offerings and processes in the art of stone sculpting.

The inclusive community of stone enthusiasts will set up a circle of tents to carve, share, learn, and be in community for the sake of stone carving. The symposium is open to all levels of experience. From beginners who have never carved stone to tradespeople, makers, hobbyists, and professional artists.  You will receive an unmatched level of creative community, a wealth of knowledge, and supportive/inspiring connections.
